Sampulung (summary)

Description
  • Description: Prominent Seattle buildings circa 1893
    Top section (left to right):
  • Pioneer Building (still standing 2007)
  • Chief Seattle
  • (upper) Old "Profanity Hill" King County Court House (demolished)
  • (lower) Hop picking
  • Princess Angeline, daughter of Chief Seattle
  • New York Building; this stood between Second and Third on Cherry, and was replaced by the Dexter Horton Building

Bottom section (left to right):

  • (upper) Denny Hotel (on Denny Hill, lost in the Denny Regrade)
  • (lower) Bailey Building (now known as Broderick Building)
  • (upper) Haller Building; this was at the northwest corner of Second and Columbia
  • (lower) "Front Street, north from Yesler Avenue": this would now be First Avenue, north from Yesler Way. The Pioneer Building at right survives 2007, as do some portions of other visible buildings; the building most prominently visible in left foreground has been replaced by a parking lot.
  • (upper) Appears to say "Hotel Mainier"; presumably a typo for "Rainier", the hotel that stood between 5th and 6th Avenue and between Columbia and Marion Streets. It was built right after the Great Fire or 1889 and remained in business only about 5 years. It survived as an apartment building until 1910 (according to Paul Dorpat, Seattle Now & Then)
  • (lower) Burke Building (and, behind that, Hotel Stevens), torn down to build Henry M. Jackson Federal Building.
